A preposition is a word placed before a Noun or Pronoun to show its relation to some other words in the sentence.

A. Use of some prepositions:

* In/at : ‘in’ before a big place, ‘at’ before a small place.
a. We live . . . . Tongi . . . Dhaka.
b. The school is . . . Rasulpur . . . Mymensing.
Ans: a. at, in. b. at , in.

*By/With : ‘By’ a person or agent, with a thing or intstrument a. The snake was killed . . Saon . . a stick.
b. The tiger was shot . . . . her . . . a gun.
Ans: a. by, with. b. by , with.

* In/ On/ To : ‘in’ within boundary, ‘on’ the boundary, ‘to’ away from the boundary.
a. Gafargaon is in mymensingh.
b. The Garo Hills are on the north of Mymensingh.
c. Japan is to the east of Bangladesh.

* Between/ Among: Between to denote ‘two’ , among to denote more than two.
a. He divided the mangoes between two brothers.
b. The man divided his land among his four sons.

Since / For : ‘since’ to denote point of time, and ‘For’ to period time.
a. It has been raining since morning.
b. Mazhar has been Reading for two hours since morning.
c. They have been playing for two hours since morning.

* Before / By / Within : ‘Before and by’ to denote a point of time and ‘within’ period of time.
a. We must return by 6 p.m (not after 6).
b. You must come back before 6 p.m (any time before 6).
c. You must return within an hour (not before).

* In / After : ( ‘In’ is used for future action and ‘after’ is used for past action.
a. We will return in a week.
b. Mazhar returned a week.

* In time / On time: in time = not late, early enough, On time = just time.
a. We reached the station in time.
b. The plane took off on time.

B. Uses of some prepositions:
a. Pure milk is dear at present.
b. He bought the goods at taka 200.
c. He could not finish the work at a sitting.
d. He sold the thing at a loss.
e. The train ran at full speed.
f. I could not know him at first sight.
g. He can see better at a distance.
h. They left home at dawn.
i. I reached home at night.
j. Mazhar is now at home.
k. They came at noon.
Similarly- at school, at the door, at a distaance, at present, at war etc.
l. He left school at 12 . (when 12 years old)
m. Mother was at work.
m. The examination is at hand. (near)
n. There is a biggar standing at the door.

By :
a. They travelled by train/car/bus etc.
b. I did it by mistake.
c. The teacher pulled him by the ear.
d. The man died by accident.
e. Can you finish the work by tomorrow?
f. We defeated them by two goals to one.
g. It is four P.M by my watch.
h. He is older than you by 5 years.
i. He knows me by name.
j. We paid by cheque.
k. He sat by me.
l. Eggs are sold by the dozen.
m. We informed him by letter or by telephone.
n. He sent a letter by post or by hand.
o. They work by day or by night.
p. He came by air/ land/ water.

a. I am speaking for my class.
b. She cried out for fear.
c. He was silent for shame.
d. We heard a cry for help.
e. He ran away for life.
f. The house is for sale.
g. Hope by the best, prepare by the worst.
h. Plant a new tree by every tree you cut down.
i. What is Dhaka famous for?
j. He did the job for nothing.
k. He was sent to prison for stealing.
l. They are the passengers for Khulna.
m. The girl is tall for her age.
n. In the desert for miles and miles there is no house.
o. He is not getting ready for school.
p. They voted for him.

d. I am in difficulty.
