Types of style

Types of style: Generally three styles were distinguished the grand style; middle style and the plain style. They can be associated with the editorial factor of tone, and can be considered three stages on scale of poetic elevation. The analogy of clothing can again give some idea of what was meant by the three styles; we may think of the plain style as the working dress of language and the grand style as ceremonial dress for a state occasion. For the middle style, between the two the watchword was elegance- perhaps respectable clothes for a night out. Plain style is moot like colloquial speech.
