The Olympic Games are considered to be the world’s foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. It is a big event for the athletes worldwide which occur every four years. Many athletes practice hardly day by day for performing in Olympic stage. They dream for an achievement, a title and want to enlighten the name of their country in the world map. But it is a matter of great sorrow that this spectacular and dazzling events insult mankind and human rights from so far. Double standard and illogical rules in costume selection between men and women make many athletes specially women athletes upset. For this reason, women of modest mentality can’t participate in various events though they has high desire.
You can easily compare with the costume of fastest man Usain Bolt with the costume of fastest lady Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Champion in 100 meter) and Allyson Michelle Felix (Champion in 200 meter). Same event, same activity but Usain wears T-shirt and half pant (covering upper part and lower part above the knee). On the other hand, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Allyson Michelle Felix are given to wear too short top and half under garment (Very much shorter in size than male wear, doesn’t cover the upper part fully and lower also.) showing maximum part of the body. Is the Olympic authority want to show a female as a sexual appeal rather than a woman athlete?
Not only that, discrimination in costume also observed in gymnastics, handball and beach volleyball. In gymnastic, men athletes wear T-shirt and loose pant, but women are given a leotard which is a skin tight one-piece garment that covers the torso but not legs. Now the question arises. same event, same practices so why this discrimination? why this illlogical and nasty rules in costume selection for women athletes?
In handball, men wear loose half pant but women are given skin tight (short in size compare with male wear) half pant. The most worst situation for women athletes is made in beach volleyball. For this event men athletes wear loose T-shirt and half pant but women are given two piece bikini. Except for height of the net (7 feet 4-1/8 inches for women and 7 feet 11-5/8 inches for men) basic rules of play are the same for men and women, so why the costume is so different that men can cover their body and women become naked? is the olympic authority interest to show women’s body rather than her performance? Are they make a field for displaying women body in sexual appeal to sell tickets?
Recently, after a long discussion the authority permit Saudi athlete Shaharkani to perform by putting head scarf. but why a athlete face harassment for their costume though she has no problem? what is the authorities’ problem?
So, IOC (international olympic committee) must change their illogical rules and remove the discrimination between men and women athletes. They must respect women not show them in a sexual appeal for sake of human rights. They must show morality and modesty in costume selection. I hope IOC will concern about this matter.
