                                                   Lesson 2: Nakshi Kantha

Nakshi kantha is a kind of embroidered (sewed, sewn, inflated) quilt. The name was taken from the Bengali word, ‘naksha’ which means artistic (creative, imaginative, inventive) pattern (design, pattern, shape, form, decoration). It is a kind of traditional craft (skill, ability) and is said to be indigenous (native, local, original, homegrown) to Bangladesh and West Bengal in India. The art (painting, skill, talent, drawing) has been practiced in rural (rustic, pastoral, country, countryside) Bengal for centuries. The name ‘Nakshi kantha’ became popular (general, common, standard) after the poet Jasimuddin’s poem ‘Nakshi kanthar Math’was published in 1929.

Traditional (old, old style, outdated) kanthas are made for family use. Old or new cloth and thread (cotton, fiber) are used to make these quilts. Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Rajshahi, Faridpur, Bogra and Jessore are most famous for this craft. Now it is produced (made, created, shaped, formed) commercially. You can find (get, discover) them in many expensive (expensive, luxurious, lavish) handicraft (craft, hand work, art) shops in cities. The quilts (comforters, sheets, blankets) are now in great demand because of the colorful patterns (types, shapes, designs, forms) and designs embroidered (sewed, sewn, inflated) on them.
